Mining certifications: why they are not enough
8. October 2024 @ 15:00 - 16:00

ENG
Join PowerShift and FIAN for a webinar on the shortcomings of mining certification schemes. Inclusive Development International (IDI) will present their findings from observing the certification of a Guinean bauxite mine by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI). Despite ASI’s goal of promoting environmental and social responsibility of mining companies, they ignored violations of their standards including environmental destruction, human rights abuses, and the failure to consult local communities. This failure raises questions about the reliability of certification schemes, especially when German and European supply chain laws increasingly rely on them to guarantee responsible sourcing. Why do such schemes overlook critical issues so often, leading to false assurances of responsible ethical practices? We invite you to discuss how current certification in mining undermine efforts for a fair and sustainable supply chain, and explore how legislation can better address these gaps.
Speakers:
Nilsun Gürsoy, Inclusive Development International
The event will be held completely in English. There will be no interpretation.

PowerShift and FIAN invite you to a webinar on the weaknesses of certification systems in mining. Inclusive Development International will present its findings from the observation of the certification of a bauxite mine in Guinea by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI). Although ASI has set itself the goal of promoting environmental and social responsibility of mining companies, numerous violations of their standards have been ignored, including environmental degradation, human rights violations, and the lack of consultation of local communities. These shortcomings raise questions about the reliability of certification systems, especially when German and European supply chain laws increasingly rely on them to ensure responsible raw material extraction. Why do such systems so often overlook critical issues, creating false assurances about ethical practices? We want to discuss how current certifications in mining undermine efforts to achieve a fair and sustainable supply chain and how legislation can better fill these gaps.
