What exactly? “Europe’s Way to Securing Raw Materials – The Role of Trade Agreements and Global Gateway for the EU’s Green Transformation”
The European Union is a low-resource region where, in addition, few of the raw materials still available are mined by comparison. The international competition for the minerals necessary for the energy transition and digitization is large and conflictual. That is why the European Commission is constantly working to improve the security of its own economies with lithium, copper, nickel and Co. To this end, it makes use of international agreements, such as trade and investment agreements, and has launched a 400 billion programme to support projects of the so-called green transformation worldwide: the Global Gateway Initiative. But the European addiction to raw materials is not without consequences, especially for people and nature in the mining areas, which are largely located in countries of the Global South. The workshop aims to provide an overview of the European Raw Materials Security Strategy and its trade instruments, as well as to raise awareness of their impact on communities in the Global South. Together, we want to explore whether, and if so, what alternatives exist to our "commodity addiction" driven by trade and investment agreements.
Participation is free of charge.
