Heat waves, droughts, water shortages, forest fires, storms, heavy rainfalls and floods, the climate crisis is the major environmental and socio-political issue of our time and also affects Berlin's urban society. The decarbonization of our society is a mammoth task, the design in parts politically controversial. Berlin has already set out in many areas, but much remains to be done.<\/p>\n

Fundamental changes are needed. The energy system needs to be switched from fossil fuels to renewables. In the transport sector, it is not only necessary to switch to battery-powered vehicles. Our mobility concepts as a whole need to change. These innovations are accompanied by an enormous need for raw materials. Metals in particular play a central role here. However, mining is far too often associated with disastrous pollution and serious human rights violations. However, the use of our natural resources must not be at the expense of people and the environment. On the one hand, primary raw material consumption must be reduced and, on the other hand, the extraction and processing of raw materials must be carried out in compliance with human and labour rights and the highest environmental standards. These are the two pillars of the raw materials transition.<\/p>\n

This brochure illustrates at the local level, using the example of Berlin, how the raw materials transition is linked to the energy and mobility transition and shows current progress as well as future challenges.
