The EU-Mercosur agreement is not only a driver of the climate crisis, it also slows down the urgently needed climate and socially just mobility transition. The study shows how the agreement would enshrine the fossil-based individualized mobility system for decades to come. Using uncovered e-mails and other documents, the author Thomas Fritz traces how the European car lobby safeguards its interests in terms of access to cheaper raw materials for the expansion of electromobility in the EU and the export of cars or car parts with climate-damaging drivetrains to Mercosur – at the expense of climate protection, workers’ rights and human rights.
