New sustainability chapters, greener trade?

21 November 2022 @ 12:00 - 13:00

Workshopreíhe Global instead of Regional

Lunch & Learn 5.0 (3/4)

The EU's trade agreements have long been criticised for having a negative impact on the environment, human rights, labour standards and our climate.  The EU Commission now wants to counter this criticism with a revised model of sustainability chapters in trade agreements, which even provides for sanctions as an ultima ratio. But what can be said of it? Are the new sustainability chapters really making EU trade policy fit for an ecological, climate-friendly future or are they just another fig leaf to justify the geopolitical interests of the EU, which it is trying to enforce with its trade agreements?

Speaker: Lis Cunha (trade expert at Greenpeace)
