No climate justice without raw material justice
28. May 2024 @ 19:00 - 20:30

The last World Climate Change Conference decided to “go away from fossils”, but new fossil sources are still being developed in Europe and globally, also to enable the processing of critical raw materials. At the same time, the need for e.g. Nickel, cobalt and rare earths, leading to shortages and even more extractivist projects. This has a drastic impact not only on our climate, but also on the environment and human rights in the mining regions.
In order for oil, gas and coal to remain in the ground worldwide and for the energy transition not to lead to a renewed exploitation of raw materials, we need an honest debate about global raw material requirements and national legislation, in particular on the Federal Mining Act. As politicians and society, it is therefore our task to search for socially just and ecologically sustainable answers to the raw materials and climate crisis.
In the wake of the OECD Forum on Responsible Mineral Supply Chains and in the run-up to the UN Climate (Interim) Conference in Bonn, we want to look from the international level to the national level of the topic and discuss which steps are necessary in politics and society to create a just raw material policy and climate justice.
Our experts:
- Michael Reckordt, PowerShift, Policy Officer for Raw Materials Policy
- Sonja Limberger, ifeu, scientist in the field of resource use and management, raw material requirements, economy-wide material flow analyses
- Cornelia Nicklas, DUH Head of Legal Affairs
- Kathrin Henneberger, Member of the Bundestag and works in the Climate & Energy and Economic Cooperation and Development Committees on extractivism (fossil) raw materials
- Moderation & Welcome: Kathrin Uhlig, MdB & Kathrin Henneberger, MdB
