The EU-Mercosur trade agreement with Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay represents a trade policy from the last century that has pushed us to the brink of the climate crisis. Last year, thanks to the wide-ranging and overwhelming criticism from civil society, we were able to prevent the signing of the agreement in the EU Council. But the EU Commission, and also the German Federal Government, are sticking to the agreement despite all criticism. Work is currently underway on an additional document aimed at achieving unity among the Member States. But a bad deal doesn't suddenly turn into a good one just because a few screws are tightened. It remains a bad deal that we must prevent. Be part of a broad international movement and join us in stopping the trade agreement between the EU and Mercosur. Support our work today!
Our work works
The protection of the environment and the climate and their importance for healthy coexistence have become clear once again as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Nevertheless, and despite full-bodied promises, EU countries continue to conclude trade agreements that harm the environment and the climate. PowerShift, together with 450 other civil society organisations from the EU and South America, launched a transatlantic alliance against the EU-Mercosur Agreement in March 2021. Total More than two million people have already petitions Signed the alliance. The pressure on those responsible is growing. Together we have the opportunity to the Agreement Completely stop this year. To do this, we need to expand our alliance work and generate even more publicity! For this we depend on your help!
Pure lip service
While the EU Commission makes far-reaching promises for a climate-neutral future and the reduction of pesticide use in agriculture with its Green Deal, it is also pushing ahead with a trade agreement that counteracts these plans. This deal is bad business for farmers and the global climate. European farmers are facing increased price pressure. You can not keep up with the price of the agricultural products from Mercosur produced on huge areas and under low environmental requirements. Environmental problems are increasing and not decreasing and are being relocated to other countries. Instead of more farms that produce under ecological standards and in the interest of animal welfare, we would have even less. Help us stop the deal.
EU-Mercosur - full speed ahead to the environmental disaster
The trade agreement with Mercosur Human rights violations, the destruction of the Amazon rainforest, the expansion of pesticide-contaminated monocultures and failure to meet climate targets lead.
The expulsion of indigenous peoples and smallholders is on the agenda in Brazil. Environmental activists and land defenders are being killed. The demand for more and more land for agriculture will lead to even more violence. The cultivation areas of monocultures, such as soya and sugar cane, as well as the grazing areas for livestock in Mercosur are already immense. The EU-Mercosur trade agreement would further accelerate the expansion of agricultural land and often illegal deforestation.
With the EU-Mercosur Agreement, the EU signals that: ‘Weiter-So’ was not a problem. We believe that a trade agreement that endangers people and puts our environment and climate at risk must not be signed!
That is why we must intensify our campaigning and lobbying activities and receivables Make your voice heard. It is not too late to stop the EU-Mercosur agreement. But for that we need your help.
