Extraction of raw materials and EU trade policy
5. December 2024 @ 19:00 - 21:00

Lecture and discussion with Bettina Müller, speaker, PowerShift e.V., Berlin
The EU needs raw materials to make its economy and society ‘climate neutral’. However, it does not have the necessary raw materials or they are not mined in the EU. This is why the European Commission and the governments of the EU Member States are pushing for the swift signature of trade agreements, strategic raw materials partnerships and projects under the EU Global Gateway global infrastructure programme. It is already becoming apparent that these contracts will create investor-friendly conditions for transnational corporations to the detriment of commodity-exporting countries.
What exactly is this about? What are the social and environmental impacts of these agreements on resource-rich countries? What consequences does this have for the climate? And what are the recommendations for action for an active civil society?
The lecture is the last part of the series Energy transition and the new wave of raw material exploitation des Evangelical Dean's Office of Darmstadt and the The Darmstadt Alliance for Just World Trade.
