The Green Divide? – Europe's climate action and the Global South

17 November 2023 @ 19:00 - 20:30

Panel discussion: The Green Divide? Europe's Climate Protection and the Global South - 17 November, 7:00 pm Literaturhaus Göttingen

The urgent question is: What about Europe's climate policy and the Global South? At first glance, it seems that the measures being taken here in Europe are designed to protect our environment and make our economy more sustainable. But the impact of our policies is not limited locally. They extend across continents and affect people, ecosystems and economies far beyond Europe's borders. At the same time, many regions of the Global South are severely affected by the effects of climate change. Rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns and the destruction of ecosystems threaten the livelihoods of many people. At the same time, many communities are facing the consequences of pollution and biodiversity loss, which pose not only environmental but also social and economic challenges. On the one hand, the discussion will deal with how Europe influences the Global South such as Africa. However, it will also look at the responsibility and opportunities for European countries in this regard. How can sustainable, fair and equitable climate partnership between Europe and the Global South be promoted? What role do renewable energies and environmentally friendly technologies play in this context? And how can we ensure that the voices and interests of the affected communities of the Global South are incorporated into this discourse?
